How can we improve Energy Efficiency with pneumatic?

June 30, 2009

The Bottom Line On a plant-wide level, steps to achieve greater energy efficiency can certainly be implemented, but end users should work with their OEMs to consider what steps can be taken at the machine level. Energy costs comprise more than half the total

cost of ownership in pneumatics today, and a constructive evaluation of pneumatic applications will quickly pay off. Every application is different, and the overall machine

concept and types of components used influence the potential for

energy savings. Pneumatics should be considered in the strategy to achieve greater energy efficiency in industrial machinery.

How far is the concern of Machine Builder on Energy Efficiency?

June 23, 2009

Recently during a fair (on automation) a specific forum was dedicated to Energy Efficiency and participants expressed and exchanged their interests on the this key topic for Sustainable Efficiency.

Surprisingly we could classify their interest in 4 types:

1- HVAC and Lift Manufacturers: Definitely Energy Efficiency is in the core of interest as in Buildings HVAC is a high consumming part of energy. As well Lift machine is clearly identified by owners and investors  as an area to be optimized for Energy Efficiency.

2- Manufacturer of Hoisting system for Industry have identified that for new projects, a more optimized system for energy consumption in their machines could impact the global investment for Electrical equipments in the plant (by optimizing the Power need you can reduce significantly the cost of equipments, generators, transformers). This can give a strong competitive advantage for the manufacturers who master that area.

3-Manufacturers in some specific high performing area (Like packaging machine) express some interest as Mechatronics can bring strong benefits in terms of energy savings

4- Others (the most significant part) only see the Buzz around Energy Efficiency and are looking for the potential benefits they can get out of it!

So interst is there but still a long way in the journey for Energy Efficiency.

The topic of sustainable development will surely be the the key subject of our concern for the Planet in the coming decades!

We will all have a common responsability in our Industries to find new solutions for producing, developping and marketing offers, products, buildings.. Being respectful for our footprint on our planet: less energy use, less CO2 meaning doing more with less.

Our website will be the place to share the best practices, methods, and experiences for all believing in that new challenge .

Schneider Electric has presented the results of Energy Management / Energy program over the period 2004-2008 :

8,1M$ has been saved on Energy Costs for the period in its manufacturing and buildings in North America. This represent roughly a decrease of 16%  of Kwh for Electricity and -13% for Gas.

The program was initiated in the frame of company program aiming at reducing WW the Energy use by 10%. The program was established following a precise methodology and key learning of implementation was:

You have to sustain the savings by monitoring and maintain with control and automation solutions
